Military service had always been something Dave wanted to pursue, especially after 9/11. His childhood left him with the belief that he was simply not tough or smart enough to make it in the military. In fact, he didn’t even believe he was smart enough to go to college. There was one high school counselor who would not take “no” from Dave on going to school, so he relented and took a shot at community college.
That decision fundamentally changed what Dave thought of as options for himself. After a year of community college and realizing it was not as hard as he expected, he switched to 4-year school. At Wichita State, he became a top-performing student, joined the McNair Scholars program, published research, and found a sense of direction and value through the church. More importantly, it helped him realize he was capable of far more than he had assumed.
After completing basic training, Dave relocated to Kansas City and spent time substitute teaching while searching for a full-time band director position. At the same time, the pull toward full-time military service never went away.
He ultimately decided to pursue a commission as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Air Force. Over the next 10 years, he served around the world, built lifelong relationships, and developed as a leader in ways he hadn’t thought possible.
